Eelco Gelling is often considered, along with his contemporary Jan Akkerman, to be the best guitarist from the Netherlands.
The self-taught Gelling began his musical career in the early 1960s in formations such as The Rocking Hurricanes and The Rocking Strings.
Around 1964, singer Harry Muskee joined Eelco's band and the style was changed from Shadows-like material to more blues-oriented work, and the band name was changed to Cuby + Blizzards.
It was also remarkable that the Drenthe formation became the favorite of the capital's underground magazine Hitweek, later Aloha. Eelco and Harry and their changing companions, besides Kinds, Middel, Beekman and Waterman, Herman Brood, Jaap van Eik, Herman Deinum, Hans Lafaille and Helmig van der Vegt, did not need to do any 'image building', that was done for them.
Cuby + Blizzards became absolute top, also outside the Dutch borders. Cuby + Blizzards made one beautiful LP after another, including 'Groeten Uit Grollo', 'Trippin' Thru' A Midnight Blues', 'Live At Düsseldorf' and 'Appleknockers Flophouse'.
When Eelco felt that all the potential had been used up in C + B, he joined Golden Earring, with whom he not only played on a number of records, but also - finally - went on tour in America. However, it didn't work out between the temperamental guitar prodigy Gelling and the tightly organized Earring company, with the result that Eelco, after a few years, left in the middle of an American tour.
Back in the Netherlands, Gelling mainly filled his time with participating in (record) sessions, for example with Flavium, and for some time as a member of Freelance Band. Until he was reunited with Harry Muskee in his Muskee Gang around '83.
In the 1990s, Eelco Gelling mainly did a lot of session work, but also played with various formations of his own.
